Verwood Rustic Fayre 2008

25th August 2008

The Verwood Rotary Club Rustic Fair.

I manage to fit this one in each year as a wind-down to the weekend of the Romsey Pageant of motoring. This fair has been going for a good many years, and as the village has grown so has the rustic fair with 140 cars, 44 motorcycles, 27 stationary engines, 13 tractors, military, commercial and emergency vehicles and not forgetting the miniature steam. Also to one side, a large car boot sale and auto jumble takes place. The arena events are run from mid-day with the Verwood Carnival Queen and her Princesses opening the attractions. They included Terrier dog racing, Andy the Clown, fly Fishing/casting demonstration, Tai Kwon Do demonstration, Schwinn bikes, Muscliffe Karate Club, and finally the event everybody looks forward to- the egg throwing and catching competition. Pairs of competitors start at 6 feet apart and throw & catch eggs, each time moving further apart until the final pair are some 30 feet apart and still have their eggs in one piece. All the stalls around the arena sell or raffle goods for one local charity or another and all funds collected at the gate go to local causes in the village. Last year over 5,000 people passed through the gate.
