At first glance it’s not easy to spot it’s origins. The body’s obviously 50s Ford but what about that roofline? Surely there’s been some major metal bashing going on there?
Well, not really. Look again. Yes it’s Ford, the same as the rest of the car, but the two halves are separated by about 20 years. Below the waist, 1959 mark 2 Ford Zodiac. Above it …Ford Capri. Obvious once you know isn’t it. What fevered imagination saw the potential in that amalgamation I wonder. A fast-back Zodiac. It shouldn’t work –but it does. And you can’t see the joins.
Beneath the new glossy black paint lurks a 302 Cobra Mustang engine, mated to a C4 auto box & B and M shifter. All that power reaches the tarmac via a heavy duty Volvo rear axle, while a mark 4 Cortina front clip keeps it pointed in the right direction. Tucked beneath the rear bumper are mounts for a towbar to allow towing of the family caravan.
At the moment the side windows are smoked Perspex & slide out to give a pillarless look for cruising, though Jerry may change them for roll-up glass at some point. The Capri roof’s been treated to some fresh black vinyl while the leather interior once graced a Rover 220 GTI.
I like this. A curious mix of parts & styles, brought together to create one guy’s vision of a very individual motor –which is what customising’s all about isn’t it.
If you’re ever in the Dartford, Kent area, keep an eye out for it.
